Choosing a dinghy mast is not just a matter of finding an extrusion that fits the deck hole. The correct spar depends on the class rules, sail plan, crew weight, rig tune and the stiffness characteristics of the mast section.
Start with the class and current rig
Boat class
Many dinghy masts are class-specific. Start with the exact class and, where relevant, the hull or rig generation.
Crew weight
Within classes that allow multiple sections, crew weight can influence the preferred stiffness and bend characteristics.
Sail & tuning
The sail cut, spreader setting, shroud tension and mast bend all work together. A different section can change the tuning range.
Existing section
Record the current mast section and fittings before replacing it, especially if the boat has been modified.
Seldén aluminium dinghy sections
Seldén states that material, section shape, size and wall thickness all influence mast bend and stiffness. Its section data therefore lists section weight, dimensions and stiffness rather than treating all aluminium tubes as equivalent.
Common reasons to change section
Do not select on diameter alone
Two mast sections can have similar external dimensions but different wall thickness, section geometry and stiffness. Use class data, manufacturer information and the actual mast designation rather than choosing by outside size alone.
