Choose the Correct Furlex 50S Size

The Furlex 50S is available for 4 mm and 5 mm forestay wire. Select a kit with sufficient supplied forestay length for the finished installation.

A Furling and Reefing System

The 50S is mechanically different from Seldén’s 20S, 30S and 40S dinghy furlers. It uses a luff extrusion around the structural forestay, allowing the headsail to be both completely furled and partially reefed.

The halyard swivel incorporates Seldén’s load-distribution system, while distance tubes within the extrusion maintain alignment around the forestay.

The 50S uses a single-groove extrusion for 5 mm luff tape. Seldén also specifies a Sta-Lok® wire terminal as part of the system design.

What Is Supplied With the Furlex 50S?

The 50S is supplied as a complete assembly kit. Components include the forestay wire, halyard swivel, lower bearing assembly, furling line, halyard lead, stanchion block and prefeeder, together with the luff-extrusion components and installation hardware.

This is an important distinction from the 20S, 30S and 40S systems, where the forestay wire is supplied separately.

Before Ordering a Replacement 50S

Confirm the existing forestay diameter and finished forestay length. It is also useful to record the upper and lower attachment arrangement, clevis-pin sizes, tack position and halyard lead before removing the old system.

The 50S is generally used on yachts in the 18–26 ft range, but the actual rig specification should always be used when selecting the system.
