We recommend a Cow Hitch Splice on the end of a Dyneema Halyard. This allows most types of fittings to be attached, and you can purchase a shackle here. If you need any advice or would prefer to talk to one of our rigging experts about your requirements please get in touch. Before you start, make sure you know the lengths of your halyards as shown in the example below.

In the world of sailing, where precision and reliability are paramount, the choice of halyard material can make or break your performance. Enter Dyneema®—a high-tech fiber that has revolutionized running rigging. When paired with professional splicing, Dyneema halyards offer unmatched strength, minimal stretch, and streamlined handling. Let’s dive into why they’re the go-to choice for cruisers, racers, and offshore adventurers alike.
Dyneema® is a brand name for ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE). It’s known for being:
These properties make it ideal for halyards, sheets, and control lines where performance and durability are critical.
Splicing refers to weaving the rope’s fibers together to form a secure loop or connection—without knots. For Dyneema halyards, splicing offers several key advantages:
Feature | Benefit |
---|---|
🔒 Low Stretch | Maintains sail shape under load, improving trim and performance |
🪶 Lightweight | Reduces weight aloft, improving stability and responsiveness |
🧼 Abrasion Resistance | Withstands friction in clutches, winches, and blocks |
🌞 UV Resistance | Long-lasting even in harsh sun exposure |
🔄 Easy to Splice | Can be tapered and customized for specific applications |
🧩 Compatible with Covers | Often paired with polyester or Technora covers for grip and durability |
Many sailors report that switching to Dyneema halyards dramatically improves sail shape and reduces luff sag, especially in upwind conditions. The minimal stretch means less need for constant trimming, and the reduced diameter (thanks to Dyneema’s strength) makes handling easier on deck.
Spliced Dyneema halyards are more than just a modern upgrade—they’re a strategic investment in performance, safety, and ease of use. Whether you're racing around the cans or crossing oceans, they offer the kind of reliability that lets you focus on sailing, not your gear.
