Compacted strand wire, commonly known as Dyform, is a high-performance option for yacht and keelboat standing rigging. The compacted construction provides higher strength and reduced stretch for a given wire diameter compared with conventional stainless steel 1×19 rigging wire.
Martin Leaning Masts & Rigging uses KOS marine-grade 316 stainless steel compacted strand wire. The 3mm and 4mm sizes use 1×7 compacted construction, while the 5mm through 12mm sizes use 1×19 compacted construction.
Each stay or shroud can be configured to your required finished length with the appropriate professionally fitted terminal at each end. Depending on diameter and application, available options can include eyes, forks, T-terminals, stemballs, studs and complete rigging-screw assemblies.
Choose the wire diameter, enter the required finished length and select the upper and lower terminations. If you only require wire cut to length, select 'None' for the relevant termination.
For detailed instructions on measuring and configuring your rigging, see our Dyform & Compacted Strand Custom Build Calculator Guide.
The table below shows the breaking-strain data currently specified for the compacted strand wire offered through this product. Breaking strain is not the same as recommended working load; wire size should be selected for the yacht, rig design and intended application.
| Diameter | Breaking Strain (kg) |
|---|---|
| 3mm | 1000 |
| 4mm | 1780 |
| 5mm | 2440 |
| 6mm | 3550 |
| 7mm | 4910 |
| 8mm | 6150 |
| 10mm | 9770 |
| 12mm | 14400 |
You can order a single replacement stay or shroud through the online configurator, or contact us for a complete yacht re-rig. If your existing rigging is available, it can be sent to our Port Solent workshop and used as a physical template for the replacement set.
If you need help identifying the correct wire diameter, measuring the finished length or selecting compatible terminals and rigging screws, please contact our rigging team. We can also provide advice by video call where useful.
